In the bustling heart of NW Washington D.C., a unique landscape design project revitalized an outdoor space and intricately balanced functionality with aesthetic appeal. The centerpiece of this transformation was a new deck designed to support a hot tub, complemented by a new patio area. Below, we explore the features that highlight our ability to meet and exceed the customer’s desires.

Sunken Hot Tub with Entertainment Space
The homeowner wanted to maximize the use of space, combining the relaxation the hot tub offers with an area conducive to entertaining guests.
We creatively designed a sunken hot tub area that naturally flowed with an adjacent entertainment space. This setup allowed for a seamless relaxation and socialization, accommodating more guests and facilitating a versatile use of the outdoor area.
Raised Planter Bed
The homeowner sought to infuse natural elements directly into the relaxation area, aiming for a blend of utility and natural beauty right behind the hot tub.
Johnson’s implemented a raised planter bed, strategically positioned behind the hot tub. This bed was not only functional, allowing for easy gardening, but also served as a natural backdrop, enhancing the serenity of the hot tub experience.

Wood Privacy Screen
Privacy in an urban setting was paramount. The client wanted to ensure a secluded and intimate hot tub experience without compromising on aesthetic quality.
Design Solution: A tastefully designed wood privacy screen was erected behind the hot tub. This screen provided the necessary privacy while also complementing the deck’s overall look, using materials that integrated seamlessly with the natural environment.
Trellis for Vines
To further the connection with nature and add a living element to the wooden structures, the customer envisioned a green, living wall.
A trellis was installed behind the hot tub to support climbing vines. This living wall concept enhanced the privacy screen and introduced a dynamic and evolving element to the landscape that will offer a touch of greenery when the vines grow in.

Natural Stone Seat Wall with Flagstone Cap
The client sought durability and elegance for the seating area, with a touch of distinctive design to set their space apart.
A natural stone seat wall was constructed, topped with a flagstone cap for comfort and style. The inclusion of a contrasting stone border distinguished the wall, offering a visual break that accentuated the design’s sophistication.
Verticality and Varied Levels
To overcome the challenge of a highly sloping landscape, the client desired a dynamic outdoor space with varied elevations.
The landscape was transformed to work with the yard’s verticality, creating a visually engaging environment. From an upper lawn to a lower lawn, then to the deck, each level offered a distinct, yet connected experience, enriching the overall spatial narrative of the garden.

Wood Privacy Screen
Aesthetic consistency throughout the landscape was important to the client, particularly in utilitarian spaces like underneath the stairs.
Thus, the area under the stairs was cleverly concealed using the same style of wood privacy screen as behind the hot tub. This maintained a cohesive look throughout the project, turning a potentially unsightly area into a harmonious feature.
Overflow Patio Space Leading into the Shed
Recognizing the need for additional functional space, the homeowner wanted to ensure that even transitional areas were thoughtfully designed.
The Johnson’s Landscaping team extended the patio, creating an ‘overflow’ area that elegantly led into the shed. This not only optimized the use of space but also seamlessly integrated storage and leisure areas.
