Chevy Chase: Where History Meets Small-Town Charm
Chevy Chase is deeply rooted in a proud tradition of American Colonial history. The name of the town itself comes from Chevy Chase, the name of the land patented to Colonel Joseph Belt in 1725 from the 5th Baron of Baltimore, Charles Calvert. Going even further back in history, the name “Chevy Chase” can be dated back to “The Ballad of Chevy Chase,” written about a 1388 battle between Lord Percy of England and Earl Douglas of Scotland.
Chevy Chase’s history embodies the entrepreneurial expansion and the pursuit of the American dream which came to define the country. In the late 1800s, Senator Francis G. Newlands from Nevada and his partners acquired land for a Washington D.C. residential streetcar suburb in what is today part of Chevy Chase. They founded the Chevy Chase Land Company in 1890 and began building and selling houses. The company even created a lake called the Chevy Chase Lake for the recreational enjoyment of its citizens.
In 1892, Senator Newlands and a few other men founded the Chevy Chase Hunt, a hunting club that would later become the iconic and exclusive Chevy Chase Club. Chevy Chase continued to develop as a residential community, and today it is one of the most prominent, well educated, and wealthiest communities in America. It is home to a number of prevalent figures in American politics, including two current Supreme Court justices (John Roberts and Brett Kavanaugh), as well as Jerome Powell, the current chairman of the Federal Reserve.

Landscaping That Adds to Chevy Chase’s Beauty
But of course, Chevy Chase’s prestigious history is not all that makes the town unique. Chevy Chase has a small-town, residential charm that can only come from a tight-knit community on the outskirts of the nation’s capital. It’s hard not to fall in love with the red brick, white window sill houses, lush, green lawns, and carefully-curated flower gardens that line the quiet streets of Chevy Chase.
At Johnson Landscaping Service, Inc., we are proud to serve the Chevy Chase community. Our team of professional landscape designers has extensive landscaping experience in the Chevy Chase community. We are knowledgeable about the local climate, the town’s regulations and codes, and the finer points that make Chevy Chase landscaping elegant and attractive.
Whether you want to create an outdoor space to host parties, make your yard more enjoyable for your family, or just impress the neighbors, our team of landscape designers will help you turn your landscaping dreams into reality. We provide a variety of landscaping services, from installing patios and stone walls to planting trees, shrubs, and flower gardens. Whatever your needs may be, we will work tirelessly to fulfill them.
Creating Custom Landscape Designs For Chevy Chase Homes
Our No. 1 goal is to make sure our clients receive the landscape they desire. Some customers have a very clear idea of what they want when they come to us, while others have only a vague sense of what they want. Either way, our landscape designers will work with you through every step of the process to make sure you get exactly what you want. We’ve even crafted our own unique 5-step process to help us achieve this goal.
First, our landscape design experts meet with you to discuss your landscaping needs. After they understand what you are looking for, we create a custom proposal for your landscape to help make your dreams a reality. Next, we discuss the proposal with you and get your feedback. After making any necessary adjustments to the proposal, our expert teams install the landscape according to the plan. Finally, we review the project and come up with a custom maintenance plan to keep the landscape vibrant and well-kempt.

Taking Advantage of Chevy Chase’s Lush Climate
Because of its proximity to the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, Chevy Chase is blessed with a mild, lush climate ideal for creating beautiful, green landscapes. Chevy Chase receives about 39 inches of precipitation per year, with about 114 days of sunshine. The town reaches an average high of 88.4 degrees Fahrenheit in July, and in January, the average low is 28.6 degrees. This mix of rain and sunshine contributes to Chevy Chase’s mild and lush climate.
At Johnson’s Landscaping Service, Inc., we have an in-depth understanding of Chevy Chase’s climate and how it impacts landscaping projects. Creating a landscape with a mix of evergreens, flowering perennials or trees, and pine or oak trees can help bring out a yard’s full potential. Lawns also tend to be green and lush in Chevy Chase. With our 5-step system, we can incorporate all of these elements and more into your landscape.
Incorporating Native Plants Into the Landscape
Some of our clients like to include native plants in their landscape design. All things being equal, native plants have a number of advantages over non-native plants. Because native plants have evolved over the centuries to the local climate, they tend to grow better and need less water and nutrients to survive. They are also less likely to fall victim to pests and diseases that might affect non-native plants. By incorporating native plants into your landscape, you will likely end up spending less time and money giving your plants nutrients, water, and pesticides.
If you want to include native plants in your Chevy Chase landscape, then you’re in luck. Chevy Chase and the surrounding area are home to a number of beautiful native trees, shrubs, vines, and other perennials. If you’re looking for large trees, the red maple is a beautiful tree native to the Eastern United States that can grow as high as 90 feet. For a native perennial that attracts butterflies and birds, coneflowers are an excellent option. They can also be used to add a splash of bright colors into your garden.
There are many other options when it comes to finding beautiful plants native to the Chevy Chase area. Contact us today for more information. Our team of experts has extensive knowledge about the different kinds of plants native to Chevy Chase and how they can be implemented into a landscape.

Extending Living Space Into The Outdoors
In addition to natural landscaping, we can incorporate any number of man-made elements into your Chevy Chase landscape. After all, you’ll want to have an outdoor space from which you can enjoy your yard. With a patio or wood deck, you can extend your home’s living space into the outdoors. A patio or deck provides endless possibilities. Homeowners may choose to create an outdoor sitting area, or even a built-in kitchen or bar.
In addition to a patio or deck, there are other man-made elements we can incorporate into your landscape. For example, our expert masons can install stone walkways to make your yard more accessible. We also install custom driveways, stone fireplaces, and stone walls. Our expert carpenters can create and install fences, gazebos, arbors, trellises, pergolas, and other wood elements in your yard.
Additionally, many of our clients want to have lighting fixtures installed in their yard. Lights allow clients to enjoy the time and work they’ve put into designing their landscape even at night. In fact, well-placed lighting fixtures can create highlights in your yard and give it a magical ambiance. Lighting also keeps your guests safe while walking through the yard in the evening, and helps prevent potential robbers or trespassers from entering your yard at night.
Bringing The Chevy Chase Community Together
Nothing brings a community together like a well-designed outdoor space. This is especially important for a tight-knit residential community like Chevy Chase, where neighbors are like family and people often spend time at each other’s houses. Take the party outside where your friends and family can soak in the sun, breathe the fresh air, and maybe start up the barbeque. At Johnson Landscape Service, Inc., we want to help you create the outdoor spaces that make this possible.
If creating outdoor spaces for you and your guests to enjoy is a priority for you, we offer a host of solutions to make this possible. Whether you want a patio, a deck, or just a well-curated lawn and flower garden, our landscape designers can help you create the yard you’ve always wanted to have. We are always eager to serve the Chevy Chase community and make the town just a little more beautiful. Give us a call today for more information.
