Great Ideas For Easy Rock Garden Landscaping | Potomac, MD

Aug 8, 2014 | Lawns

There are many different types of garden types that you can explore. Some require a lot of space, time and planning and others are very simplistic and easy to maintain. Beautiful rock garden landscaping designs are a great way to add color, style, and value to your home or business. While they do require a little more planning at the start, a well designed and installed rock garden can be very easy to maintain.

There are three primary areas you need to focus on when it comes to rock garden landscaping:

Location

One of the most appealing things about rock gardens is that they can be any size. The size of your available space will determine the size of the rocks you use and the type of design you implement. large areas can utilize larger stones and rocks to take up space and create bold focal points. Smaller rock gardens use smaller stones and rely more on the plants to create the strong focal points. You can get some great ideas for how space impacts your garden design by looking through photos others have shared on social media sites like Pinterest.

Plants

While rocks gardens are known for their stonework, you cannot have a garden without plants. Any plant technically can be used in a rock garden provided it has room to grow, but there are many wonderful plants that are excellent options for use in a rock garden. You will want to include some tall plants for focal points, bright colors, small plants to peek out from between the stones, and creeping ground cover plants that can cascade over the rocks. The important thing to remember is that the plants you want to use in your rock garden landscaping project need to be able to survive in your climate zone. It would be a good idea to take the advice of the National Gardening Association and check your plants against the zone lists to see what will and will not survive in your area.

Maintenance

One of the best features of the rock garden, and one of the main reasons they are so popular, is that once they are installed and established, they require very little care. If you have used plants that are suited for your climate zone and have considered water and light needs, you will only need to do occasional trimming and maintenance on your rock garden.
