Landscaping Designs for Your Shady Lawn | Chevy Chase, MD

Sep 27, 2013 | Gardens

Chevy Chase, MD

We treasure the beautiful, mature trees in our yards, yet with their ample shade comes landscaping design challenges that can flummox even the most seasoned green thumb.

A shady lawn doesn’t mean a lawn that can’t maintain attractive landscaping, though, and in the hands of professionals, your yard can produce a variety of blooms and ground covers that will thrive.  Shade doesn’t have to be an obstacle; when the right plants are chosen, any landscape can flourish.

Landscape design experts from Johnson’s Landscaping Service begin every project with a visit to your property to assess the area and discuss your needs and desires.  We then design a proposal that’s tailored to you and your space, using our extensive experience as the foundation for our work.

With a shady lawn, we might incorporate a colorful ground cover like Ajuga, which has glossy, deep green leaves and produces blue flowers in the spring.  Or we could use lungwort, a beautiful plant with a less beautiful name, that offers striking purple flowers and elegant leaves.  Another great, early blooming perennial is Hellebore, which blooms in a variety of shades in late winter or early spring.  Even better, it’s resistant to deer and rabbits.

Beyond planting, we’ll discuss options for pavers, outdoor lighting, water features, or anything else you desire to make your lawn reach its full potential.  Our family has been serving Northwest DC and Montgomery County for over five decades, and you’ll get a sense of our experience from the very first conversation we have.
