Ready for a Change? Landscape Design Ideas to Get You Started | Washington DC

Jun 26, 2014 | Lawns

Summer is an ideal time to transform your outdoor space. The weather is generally favorable for construction, and fresh plantings bring so much life to your landscape.

If you’ve been contemplating major or minor changes to your home, here are a few landscape design ideas to inspire you.

Get Creative with Foundation Planting

Foundation plantings are the plants around the foundation of a house. In many cases these plantings are a bit ho-hum. A few bushes, and perhaps a flower bed. But foundation planting can be so much more.

if you’re not excited by the plantings around your house, it’s time for a makeover. New plants and hardscaping can showcase your home, harmonizing with the color and architecture of the house. This Old House offers tips for picking the right plants and bringing four-season interest to your foundation planting.

Add a Water Feature

There’s something so relaxing about water. Large or small, a water feature can bring a calming element to your landscape. Water features come in many shapes and size–from simple fishponds to dramatic fountains. For ideas, take a look at HGTV’s water features for any budget.

Fire Things Up

If you love to entertain, or just love the outdoors, an outdoor kitchen or fireplace could be just right for your home. Imagine summer barbecues with family and friends. Crisp autumn evenings in front of the fire. You might even enjoy grilling as the snow falls. To get fired up with ideas, visit Better Homes and Gardens’ gallery of outdoor fireplaces.
