Why Fall is the Best Time for Landscaping

Fall may sound like an odd time to start your landscaping project, but there are actually numerous benefits to starting your dream outdoor space in the autumn months. From the weather to the watering, the fall offers advantages that you’ve probably never even thought of.
Better Conditions
For starters, fall is the best time to start your landscaping job because of the weather. Traditionally, people think of spring as a great time to start planting, but fall offers much more pleasant weather for gardening. With the cool winds, temperate climate, and lack of sun, fall provides the perfect weather to plant flowers and shrubs in the front garden.
We can get jobs done faster when its overcast and our crews aren’t working under the hot sun. Especially if those jobs involve a lot of the back-breaking work of hardscaping, like installing patios, retaining walls and driveways. If you’ve got a hardscaping project, you want to get it done in the “offseason”.
Plants Can Thrive
Furthermore, because the weather in the fall season is balmier, the plants are able to establish themselves in a favorable environment before they go into the winter months. The climate in the winter months can be very harsh for the plants, especially with the cold weather. For most plants, roots do not grow as well in the cold. If you plant the flowers, shrubs, or trees earlier, the roots are able to dig themselves deeper into the soil. Giving the roots time to set themselves is important to ensure full-grown, healthy plants in the spring.
Less Maintenance
A third advantage to doing your landscaping in the fall is that the plants need less watering because it is not as hot outside as it is in the summer and spring months. Of course, you will still have to water your plants. In the summer and spring, the heat in the air and from the sun dries out the soil, taking necessary water away from the roots of the plant. When the weather is cooler, the plants are able to soak up the water and nutrients in the soil, allowing for more growth and deeper establishment in the soil.
Time for Correction
A fourth advantage to having your landscaping done in the fall months is that once you do your landscaping in the fall, you can address any issues in the wintertime. This last advantage applies mostly to patios, walkways, stone walls, lighting, fences, decks, and gazebos. Imagine you are adding your patio to your backyard. Once the patio is finished, you walk outside to see it, and you immediately fall in love. However, you notice that you imagine a fire pit extension, which may be possible with a small extension. We can do that for you in the winter, so that when it is time for your annual Valentine’s Day party, the patio is exactly how you want it, and the couples’ s’mores date plays out exactly how you planned.
